Electronic/Event Data Recorders (EDR) exist in most vehicles on the road today. Since 1994, EDR has been proliferating through passenger and light and medium duty commercial vehicles. Heavy duty (tractor-trailers) can also record and store electronic data pertinent to an investigation. All of these various systems require specialized knowledge and expertise to effectively obtain and interpret the information. We strive to not only understand what's written on the page but how that information was recorded and what relevance it has to the subject incident. All of this information is important in accurately reconstructing an incident.
Displaying and communicating the intricacies of EDR systems at the time of trial is the most important aspect of our work. We strive to keep oratory skills as our most fundamental skill so we can convey the science of forensics to everyone.
Electronic Data Recorders help to understand driver behaviors prior to an incident. They can offer insights into vehicle speeds, braking, and acceleration which assist in the reconstruction of incidents. GPS and other logging systems record truck motion and driver habits.
The Bosch CDR tool can assist in acquiring data from nearly all vehicle makes and models on the road today. If it isn't covered by the CDR tool today then it will likely be covered in the near future. Contact us to discuss any specific vehicle you may be interested in acquiring data from.
Ever wonder what the text message said that notified the driver just prior to a collision? The advanced computer systems in vehicles store various pieces of information that can assist in our reconstructions.
Kia and Hyundai vehicle store EDR data similar to the Bosch CDR report. Both manufacturers have their own specific tool to acquire the data.
Similar to the Bosch CDR system, Tesla records data related to a collision event. A Tesla will also store and send information regarding vehicle usage to Tesla. This information can be retrieved.
From Audi to Volkswagen, Toyota to Tesla, many vehicles record and store information related to the advanced driver assistance systems. Data is primarily stored in the form of photographs or video which relate to a trigger event but can also include various data about the driver's behavior.
